Woman Arrested for Death of Infant

Officers from the Citrus Heights Police Department (CHPD) have arrested a woman for the death of her 8-month-old infant boy last September, according to an official press release.

Sarah Stephens

Sarah Stephens, 32, of Sacramento was reportedly arrested at her home on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, and charged by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office for second degree murder and felony child endangerment charges. She was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.

According to the CHPD, in late September 2012, officers responded to a report of an unresponsive 8-month-old male infant in an apartment complex in the 7000 block of Auburn Boulevard. Officers reportedly arrived and found the infant deceased, but did not find any signs of foul play. The toxicology report would later show the infant succumbed to an apparent drug overdose.

Over the following months, Citrus Heights detectives in cooperation with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, Sacramento County Crime Lab, Child Protective Services and medical professionals reportedly determined the mother, Stephens, knowingly and without regard for the infant’s health had administered controlled substances to the baby, ultimately causing his death.
