Postal Inspectors are Investigating Mail Box Theft

SAN BENITO—Postal Inspectors with the San Jose Office are investigating a series of mailbox thefts of post offices.

Hollister Post Office

“We are investigating a few post office boxes that have been broken into in the lobbies of the Gilroy, Hollister, Morgan Hill, and San Juan Bautista locations,” Post Inspector Jeff Fitch said.

Investigators from the San Jose office are responsible for the investigation.  “But they need more information,” Inspector Fitch added, “We need more people to come forward so we are taking this opportunity to get the word out.”

At this time in the investigation, little information on the burglaries has been found.  The mailboxes that were broken into were located in the lobbies of the targeted post offices. Inspectors are also investigating post office boxes outside of the listed cities.

It is a federal crime to steal mail from a mailbox and the violations are covered under 18 USC 1708, theft of mail and 18USC 2115, Burglary of a Post Office.  Each violation is punishable of up to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.

The United States Post Office would like to remind everyone who has had their post office box broken into to please contact their office at (877) 876-2455 or their 24-hour dispatch number or on line at postalinspectors@uspis.gov.

The United States Post Service has a standing $10,000 dollar reward for the arrest and the conviction of the person or persons responsible for the break-ins and theft of the mail.
