Suspect Arrested after East Palo Alto Shooting

East Palo Alto police officers were able to arrest a suspect in connection to a non-fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon.

600 Block of Bell Street

Officers were dispatched to the 600 Block of Bell Street when the city’s “Shot Spotter,” a system that allows the department to detect the location of a gunshot, detected gunshots.

Once officers arrived, they found a shooting victim, 20 year-old Michael Mariscal of East Palo Alto. Mariscal was suffering from one gunshot wound to his leg. He was later transported to a local hospital, where he is now in stable condition.

The investigation of the shooting led to possible leads for suspects. Along with the Menlo Park Police Department, the Palo Alto Police Department, the San Mateo County Gang Task Force, and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Officer canine unit, the EPAPD’s Criminal Investigation Division found the possible location where they believed the suspect to be hiding at.

The lead brought officers to the 1500 block of Ursula Way. Officers were able to arrest 32 year-old Ernesto Cuellar of East Palo Alto.

Family members and officers both report that Mariscal was walking up the driveway of his grandparent’s home when he was approached by Cuellar, who began shooting. As Mariscal attempted to run to the front door, he was shot in the leg. Family members have also added that he was shot in the back as well. The motive behind the shooting is unknown at this time.
