Atwater Teenager Arrested for Fatally Beating Dog

ATWATER – A 19-year-old was arrested this week for allegedly brutally beating a dog to death with a wooden board and then dumping the remains in a trash bin.

Lorenzo Segundo

Police say that witnesses saw Lorenzo Segundo beating a small dog with a fence board just before 7:40 p.m. on Muir Avenue near Acacia. The dog was a small brown adult Chihuahua mix. Authorities say it was likely a stray.

Segundo allegedly hit the dog six to seven times after it walked up to his dog. Segundo then threw the dog’s body into a trash bin, where officers later found it.

Authorities say the dog’s body showed fractures to its eye socket, skull and vertebrae, and that it bled from its right ear canal and mouth. They believe the dog likely died of head trauma.

Witnesses reported the crime and officers with the Atwater Police Department were able to locate and arrest Segundo at the scene. He was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of felony animal cruelty, but he posted bail and was released.
