Suspect Arrested in College Craigslist Scam

BAKERSFIELD — A 28-year-old man is in custody after scamming Bakersfield college students on Craigslist.

A month-long investigation drew to a close on July 1 with the arrest of Tope Onosohare Jelugbo on charges with forgery, identity theft, using a computer to commit a crime, business burglary in the second degree, and for forging checks.

His bail is set at $71,073, which includes an outstanding warrant for vehicle violations.

On June 7, investigators from the Bakersfield Police Department said they were conducting a joint investigation with California State University- Bakersfield, regarding a scam involving ads posted on Craigslist. In the ads, Jelugbo posed as a student of the school that was seeking a room for rent.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or who has been a victim of this scam is asked to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111 or Detective Damacio Diaz at 326-3858 or Detective Blaine Craig at 326-3541.
