Elderly Man in Critical Condition After Alleged Assault by Neighbor

GROVER BEACH – One man is in jail and an elderly man is in critical condition at an area hospital following an altercation between the two neighbors.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, officers responded to a 911 call in the 300 block of Beckett Street, where they found Benjamin Carroll, Sr., 69, unconscious and not breathing, police said.

According to police, the elderly man and his 32-year-old son, Benjamin Carroll, Jr., were involved in a verbal altercation with their neighbor, Jerry Odom, 54. During the altercation, Odom allegedly physically assaulted both men, knocking them to the ground.

During the alleged assault, the elder Carroll went into cardiac arrest and wasn’t breathing when officers arrived at the scene. Officers performed CPR on the victim and he was transported to a local hospital, where he’s listed in critical condition.

Odom was booked at San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon, misdemeanor battery and elder abuse. His bail was set at $50,000.
