13-Year-Old Helps Prevent Attempted Kidnapping

MODESTO – A man was arrested for an attempted kidnapping after he interrupted several children playing basketball in their driveway on Sunday night.  Police reported that 32-year-old John Otis Jenkins approached an 8-year-old boy as he retrieved his basketball from a neighbor’s yard in the 1800 block of Sunrise Avenue.

Jenkins made a sexually inappropriate comment to the boy, then picked him up in an apparent attempt to take him  away.  Both the boy and one of his friends, 13-year-old Marisa Martinez, began yelling and freed the boy from Jenkins’ grasp.

As Jenkins went to a church around the corner on Norwegian Avenue, Marisa’s mother Kristen Martinez called the police.  Jenkins was apprehended at the church and arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and annoying or molesting a child.  He is a registered sex offender.
