Birthday Party Turns Violent

Suspect found after being profiled on local TV.

SALINAS—Officers with the Salinas Police Department responded to a report that a wanted suspect had been seen in the area.  When officers arrived, they spotted 32-year-old Salinas resident Mary Jane Yanez standing near a business on Capitol Street.

Mary Jane Yanez, 32

Yanez had eluded the police since Sunday, when she fled after assaulting another guest at a birthday party on Archer Avenue in Salinas.  On Sunday, when police responded to the initial call of the fight they could not find either the victim or the suspect.

About 40 minutes after arriving at the scene, a local hospital reported that they had a victim of a stabbing that was being treated for her injuries.  Police responded and found the 31-year-old victim from the Archer Street altercation.

“The two were friends, we don’t know what set Ms. Yanez off, but because they were friends we were able to get important information on her,” Salinas police officer Miguel Cabrera said.

The victim was being treated for multiple lacerations to her face, chest and back area.  The victim’s injuries were serious but not life threatening.

Police interviewed the victim and were able to ascertain from her that she and Yanez were indeed at the birthday party on Archer Avenue when an argument ensued. The argument quickly escalated into a violent attack.  According to the victim, Yanez pulled a knife and attacked her, causing the injuries to her face, back and chest.

Officers were unable to locate Yanez until they received a phone tip from a concerned citizen who was watching KION’S ‘Manhunt Monday’s’ and recognized her as a person seen on Capitol Street.

“We have had numerous contacts with Yanez,” Officer Cabrera added. ”When she was seen by the officers she tried to conceal her face, but we knew who she was.”

Ms. Yanez was arrested without further incident and transported to Monterey County Jail and booked on attempted murder charges.

The Salinas Police Department is actively investigating this incident and is urging anyone with information to call the department at 831-7758-7321.
