Suspects caught on tape breaking window

SANTA CRUZ—Santa Cruz County Sheriff Deputies responded to a commercial burglar alarm at 110 Cooper Street in Santa Cruz.  When deputies arrived at the scene they found that the front window of O’Neill’s Surf Shop had been broken and five skateboards taken.

Harley Wolfgang Dean

“A witness saw the two suspects break the window and called 911,” Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Deputy April Skalland said. “ The witness provided an accurate description that led to the arrest of the suspects.”

Santa Cruz County Sheriff Deputies canvassed the area around O’Neill’s Surf Shop and found 19-year-old transient Harley Wolfgang Dean and 25-year-old transient Daniel Christopher Hark, hiding behind cars in the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium parking lot.

The suspects were arrested and booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on charges of first-degree burglary.  Their bail as been set at $25,000 each.  Deputies also collected surveillance video that caught Dean and Hark committing the burglary.

“They took about $1000 worth of skateboards and tried to take some ‘Penny Boards’ from the store too,” Blake, an O’Neill’s Surf Shop employee said. “They threw two big rocks through the window.”

Deputies recovered the five stolen skateboards that were taken in a flowerbed near O’Neill’s Surf Shop with the security tags still on them.  O’Neill’s opened its doors some 60 years ago and has become an iconic institution in Santa Cruz.  O’Neill’s Surf Shop does a lot to give back to the Santa Cruz Community. They’re most famous for the O’Neill’s Sea Odyssey program, an educational cruise aboard a catamaran.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff Office is actively investigation this case and is asking anyone with information to call the Sheriff Department at 831-454-2440 or their tip line at 831-454-2847.
