Promising Concord High School Athlete Shot to Death in Bayview

Just hours after taking this photo, Saturday evening turned into a tragic moment when a 17 year old Concord High School football player was shot to death in the 1st block of Osceola Lane at around 10:00 p.m.

Montreal Blakely had been standing on Osceola Lane with his friends in the Bayview district when an unidentified assailant opened shots at Blakely, with at least one bullet shot into Blakely’s head. Blakely was then driven to a local hospital by a friend, where he was later pronounced dead.

Blakely attended Concord High School, where he played offense and defense for the school’s football team. He was a star student with an outstanding GPA of 3.6, and had plans of attending a U.C. college.  He had transferred to Concord just last year from Mt. Diablo, where his mother believed Concord would be a better fit for the thriving athlete.

Concord High Principal Gary Mcadam, who knew Blakely as a middle school student, spoke highly of Blakely: “He always had a smile on his face when I saw him this year. His mother told me how excited he had been at coming to school, and that he had a good relationship with all his teachers.”

Blakely’s football coach Brian Hamilton said “He came from a background of not having much, so he really appreciated what he had.” After informing the football team, Hamilton said some players decided to purchase Christmas trees for families in need, as a way to remember Blakely.

Students of Concord High organized via social media to wear black to school on Monday to mourn Blakely. There will also be a vigil for Blakely this Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Concord High School football field.

Blakely’s mother visited the school’s varsity football team Monday morning, Hamilton said. His family could not be reached for thoughts or comments.

It is unclear to San Francisco Police why Blakely was in San Francisco, but it is known that Blakely’s father lives in the Bayview district and, according to friends, Blakely visited him often. Police also said Monday that they had no information on possible suspects.

The community is asked to help police with the investigation with any information and should call the San Francisco Police Department’s homicide detail at (415) 553- 1145 or the anonymous tip line at (415) 575- 4444, or send a tip by text to TIP411 with “SFPD” in the message.
