Officer involved shooting in LA hospital
A Los Angeles area hospital became a crime scene as a suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting during the early morning hours of October 18th.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detectives are investigating the incident that began with a drug-related arrest and ended in the death of the suspect, Jilberto Gutierrez, at Centinela Hospital in Inglewood.

Gutierrez was originally arrested for possession of a controlled substance by LASD deputies in South Los Angeles on the afternoon of October 17th. After being taken to his jail cell, he developed health issues, and paramedics were called to the scene.
Gutierrez was transported by an ambulance with the assistance of a police escort to Centinela Hospital’s emergency room. While in the emergency room, he had one wrist handcuffed to the gurney and the other wrist free. According to and LA Sheriff’s press release, at 1:10 AM, the Gutierrez used his free hand to grab a nearby officer’s gun. Fearing for both his own safety and that of his partner, a second deputy fired his weapon at the suspect.
Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the scene. Both of the deputies involved in the incident were unharmed.
Following protocol after every officer-involved shooting, separate investigations will be conducted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney, the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau, and the Internal Affairs Bureau. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review will also have full access to facts throughout every phase of the investigation. Concluding all investigations, the shooting will be reviewed by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee.
The LASD did not respond to requests to comment on the incident.
