Jr. High Campus “Sports Collector” Busted

June 14 – Santa Barbara County

Cameron Taylor, 21, a resident of Santa Maria in northern Santa Barbara County, working as a security guard at Lakeview Junior High School in nearby Orcutt under the employ of Overland Security Services, was arrested just after midnight this morning on charges of felony burglary and petty theft.

At 12:10 a.m. June 14th, Santa Barbara County Sheriff deputies responded to a burglar alarm call emanating from the Lakeview gym building.  Upon investigation, deputies observed broken trophy cases and a number of disturbed items indicating that others were missing.  According to Drew Sugars, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Public Information Officer, deputies discovered “a number of trophy items in nearby trash cans.”

Shortly thereafter, Taylor—dressed in his Overland Security uniform–was contacted elsewhere on school grounds.  An interview ensued, and deputies accompanied Taylor to his vehicle for the purposes of retrieving his identification and employment verification.

At his car, as Sugars reported to the media, “Taylor leaned over to retrieve his wallet and a baseball bearing the autograph of major league pitcher Robin Ventura” fell out of his pocket.  Ventura—currently the manager of the Chicago White Sox—is an alumnus of Lakeview Jr. High and had donated a number of memorabilia items to his alma mater.

A search of Taylor’s person quickly followed, and pieces of the trophy case lock were also found in his pocket.  Moments later, Taylor was placed under arrest and was subsequently booked into Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $20,000.
