Parlier Man sentenced

On Friday, May 26, a Parlier man was sentenced to 15 years in prison, according to Fresno County Superior Court Reports. Jesus Nunez, 38, intended to shoot a dog that was nipping at his leg but instead shot his sister, Leticia Casa, 40, outside the family home on Cypress Avenue in Parlier on March 30, 2011 at around 5:20 p.m.

Last month, Nunez was convicted by a jury of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment and being a felon in possession of a handgun. Prior convictions, according to the report, include possession of drugs and domestic violence.

Judge John Vogt said Nunez deserved the maximum sentence because he had recently been released from parole and knew he should not carry a handgun. The report also indicated that Nunez had to activate two safety devices to fire the gun and when discharged, the bullet flew by the head of a 9-year-old. Casa died from the gunshot wound underneath the carport while family members looked on. Judge Vogt said he knew that Nunez was sorry but that did not change the outcome.
