In Jail & Busted Again

Santa Maria – May 4

On Monday, April 30th, Jonelle Anthony Smith was contacted by Santa Maria Police Department detectives pursuant to a domestic disturbance call in a mid-town neighborhood.  According to Drew Sugars, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Public Information Officer, at that time it was discovered that Smith—who has a felony record—“was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun”.  He was arrested and taken into custody for violation of the terms of his parole specifically prohibiting him from having contact with firearms.

After being booked into the North Santa Barbara County Jail facility prior to transport to the main jail in Goleta, investigators noted that Smith, 38, was a close match they had to the description of a reported burglary suspect reported in Santa Maria on April 24th.

Sugars reported to the media that on the night of the burglary, “a suspect entered an unlocked apartment where a mother and two children were sleeping” and ransacked the residence before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Following a jailhouse interview of Smith regarding the earlier burglary, Smith was re-booked into jail and held on charges of first-degree residential burglary.  He remains in custody.
