Merced Cane Attack

A Merced man was arrested last Monday in the early hours of the morning for assaulting a couple with a deadly weapon. Bohnert Conway was arrested for attacking Victor and Amelia Gonzalez with a cane on the 1100 block of West Main Street. The officer dispatched to the scene confirmed that Conway was under the influence of alcohol.

According to Victor Gonzalez’s account to the police, he and Conway got into a verbal altercation that caused Conway to hit Gonzalez several times in the face. After witnessing this, Amelia Gonzalez attempted to give her husband a cane to defend himself, only to see Conway pry it away. Conway then proceeded to beat both Gonzalezes with the cane until authorities arrived. When the officer arrived on the scene, Conway attempted to escape, but was eventually arrested and detained. Both Victor and Amelia Gonzalez were treated for minor and moderate injuries when paramedics arrived on the scene, but they refused to be taken to the hospital for further treatment. Conway was later booked at the Merced County Jail and charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and parole violations.
