Two teens arrested in shooting of 14-year-old

FRESNO – A 14-year-old boy is in the hospital after being shot by gang members also in their teens.

Fresno police responded to reports of gunfire in the 1900 block of Abby Avenue near Harvey Avenue and Hwy 180 around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to police, the 14-year-old victim was working on a car parked out on the street with several other people when a 16-year-old boy walked up and started making gang calls. He then pulled out his gun and fired multiple rounds. Only the 14-year-old victim was hit.

Witnesses at the scene told police officers that the suspect fled on foot. One witness chased after the gunman and helped officers locate him at an apartment complex a few blocks away on East White Avenue. More than a dozen officers surrounded the complex and eventually arrested the 16-year-old suspect for the shooting.

Police used a helicopter to try to track down another suspect. They ended up locating and arresting a 15-year-old boy for being an accomplice to the shooting. Police say the two suspects appear to be members of a gang, but the 14-year-old they shot is not a gang member.

“Right now, we’re hearing nothing that the victim provoked this or that the victim was a gang member,” said Lt. Anthony Martinez with the Fresno PD. “That’s something that may come out later in the investigation, but at this point everything says the attack was unprovoked.”

The victim was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he is in stable condition. His injuries were non-life threatening.
