Burned vehicle victim identified

A suspicious burned out Mercedes Benz was first discovered in the outskirts of southeast Fresno back on Friday, and the identity of the male who was left inside the engulfed vehicle has now been unveiled.

Randy Rios

The burned Mercedes was found on the cross streets of Fowler and Central Avenues, when a body was first discovered inside. On Monday afternoon, Fresno County Sheriff spokesman Chris Curtice revealed that the person inside the car was identified as 29-year-old Randy Rios.
“A records check of the burnt vehicle found it to be a black covered 2002 Mercedes Benz C320, registered to Rios,” Curtice said. “Rios was last seen the evening before his body was discovered, driving the Mercedes around Sanger.”
Firefighters came to the burned vehicle around 4 a.m early Friday. Investigators said that they received a call early in the morning regarding a car on fire. Once Firefighters attended to the vehicle, they discovered a trapped human being who was burned to death. “At that point, they backed out and contacted the sheriff’s office,” Curtice said.
The area surrounding Fowler and Central avenues is known for being relatively quiet, and a place where cars are sometimes dumped and burned.  This particular car, however, pointed to what appears to be the 17th homicide this year for Fresno County, and now the sheriff’s department is asking the public’s help for solving this case.
Anyone that has information is being asked to contact Detective DeWayne Chatman at (559) 488-3921, the county sheriff’s office at (559) 488-3111, or Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-7867.
