Alert resident stops Milpitas burglary

The actions of an alert neighbor aided police in arresting four juveniles allegedly responsible for an attempted burglary in Milpitas early Monday morning.

Milpitas police say a woman living near Jerry’s Market at 1491 S. Main Street awoke to the sounds of an alarm and a barking dog at about 4 a.m. Halloween morning.

The woman peered out her window and spotted three people jumping the fence in the pantry of the Milpitas Food Pantry and running toward the railroad tracks, officials say.

The woman immediately called 911 and reported all she had seen. Officers responded to the scene within minutes and were able to arrest three juveniles on railroad property. A fourth juvenile reportedly climbed another fence into the parking lot of A1 Tool Shed, but was also arrested a short time later, police say.

Further investigation revealed that the four teens had broken the front glass door of Jerry’s Market in an alleged attempt to burglarize the business and the alarm was activated when the glass was broken.

Investigators say the four juveniles were arrested on various charges, including attempted burglary, conspiracy, trespassing, and breaking curfew. They were cited and released into the custody of their parents.

Milpitas police are crediting the quick reaction of the neighbor as the main reason the suspects were captured within minutes of the crime.

“We encourage everyone to call 911 as soon as they see or hear anything suspicious,” Milpitas Police Chief Dennis Graham said.
