Mother suspected in beating of baby daughter

SAN BERNARDINO – Police arrested a 20-year-old mother as a suspect in the beating of her seven-week-old daughter on Monday after fire department personnel responded to an emergency call.

Valen Reynolds, 20, was arrested for corporal injury to a child. The child’s condition has ranged from critical to serious.

A 911 call was made by Reynolds shortly before 7 p.m. who reported her child wasn’t breathing. When paramedics arrived at the home in the 2200 block of East Pumalo St., they immediately took the child to the hospital for additional treatment.

Hospital officials discovered significant bruising on her body, face and head. Police were called and upon questioning of the parents, Reynolds was arrested at 1 a.m.
There have been several interviews with the suspect, said Lt. Paul Williams, the spokesman for San Bernardino police. “Her story has changed multiple times,” he said. “She has a skull fracture,” said Williams about the child.

The child’s parents, including the suspect and her husband, were present at the hospital during medical treatment and subsequent police investigation. Williams said, “The husband was not home at the time (when paramedics arrived).” He is not a suspect in the case, said Williams, adding that the victim has a twin sibling, “who was not harmed at all.”

The case will be turned over to the District Attorney for evaluation, said Williams. Reynolds who, according to court records, has no previous criminal history was booked at West County Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
