Chowchilla high school coaches accused of sexual misconduct

CHOWCHILLA – An investigation is currently ongoing at Chowchilla High School, where it was announced Sunday that two softball coaches had been arrested for inappropriate sexual conduct with minors.

Arrested were Ed Tovar, 37, the junior varsity softball coach at Chowchilla High, and Earl Spomer, 39, who works as a volunteer coach with both the junior varsity and varsity teams. Tovar is also a correctional sergeant at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla. A 13-year employee of the institution, Tovar has been placed on paid leave until the investigation ends.

Chowchilla police Chief Jay Varney released a statement on Sunday indicating that information about the case is being kept confidential due to the nature of the investigation.

“We do not believe that officials at the high school had any indication that these arrestees were involved in any behavior of this nature prior to the events of this week,” Varney said.

Varney also stated in the release that both men were arrested for what was deemed “multiple felony and misdemeanor charges related to inappropriate sexual conduct with minors.”

The police chief indicated that school officials have been cooperating with the current investigation.

This is now the second sexual misconduct case this month that involved a high school-level coach in the Central Valley. Back on April 5, San Joaquin Memorial High junior varsity basketball coach William Green, 32, of Fresno was accused of molesting two teenage girls who were also his foster daughters.
