Husband arrested in Merced teacher’s stabbing death

MERCED – Merced police revealed on Monday that they have arrested the husband of the elementary school teacher who was found stabbed to death at her home last week.

Diane Romero, 44, was found with fatal stab wounds in the pool of her backyard early Thursday morning. Officials say that she was deceased before being placed in the family swimming pool.

Her husband, 41-year-old Rudy Romero, was found nearby also suffering from stab wounds. Officers have not yet said how they believe Rudy Romero received his wounds.

Rudy Romero is currently being hospitalized for his wounds and is under 24-hour guard, but will be transferred to the Merced County Jail when he is released. Police spoke with him in the hospital Saturday and he was subsequently placed under arrest.

“Following conversations with Rudy Romero, with witnesses, and the evidence at the scene, officers have arrested Rudy Romero in the death of Diane Romero,” said Merced police Lt. Andre Matthews.

The victim was a third-grade teacher at Peterson Elementary School in Merced for 13 years. Her husband was a bus driver for the Merced Union High School District.

The couple’s two teenage sons are staying with family, police said.
