Man that allegedly torched sherriff’s car arrested

COSTA MESA — A park ranger’s tip and an ongoing manhunt paid off Saturday morning when police were able to locate and arrest a man they believe set fire to an Orange County Sherriff’s Department car.

Gabino Campo Jr., 28, of Santa Ana was located sitting on a park bench in Lion’s Park just before 8 a.m. Saturday, according to police.

Campo was reportedly contacted earlier in the week by a park ranger who learned he had a warrant out for his arrest and was a suspect in the Jan. 27 car burning that occurred in the parking lot of a Claim Jumper restaurant on East 17th Street in Santa Ana.

Police suspected Campo in the car burning and had been searching for him, a search that culminated with their return to the park where the ranger and Campos had interacted.

Campo was jailed in Santa Ana and faces charges of arson with no bail set.
