Drinking and hunting don't mix

ETNA — Two local men learned the hard way that guns, hunting and alcohol don’t mix.

Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Susan Gravenkamp said that John Cary Sutter, 47, and Albert Hendrickson Denny, 60, had been arrested on Sept. 27.

“The sheriff’s office received a report of some hunters drinking,” Gravenkamp said. The men had been seen hunting in the area of French Creek and Duck Lake Trailhead near Etna.

Gravenkamp reported that a deputy contacted the two men, along with a male juvenile who had been hunting with them. A California Highway Patrol officer arrived on the scene, helping with the field sobriety tests.

“Both men were intoxicated,” Gravenkamp said, “and were arrested.”

Sutter was charged with hunting while intoxicated, child endangerment and a warrant charging him with revocation of probation.

Denny was charged with hunting while intoxicated.

A loaded revolver and three loaded hunting rifles were confiscated from the two men. Gravenkamp said that a family member was called to pick up the child.

Sutter remains in custody with bail set at $25,000. Denny was released with an October court date.
